Like a fine wine, Brisbane’s “White Waltham” impresses with age
VISITORS to New Zealand’s Craggy Range winery will appreciate a similar vein of class and understated luxury in the architecture of “White Waltham” on the Brisbane River.
The 5.2ha Moggill estate, in Brisbane’s west, with 306m of water frontage, is owned by former billionaire Terry Peabody and his wife Mary, who established the Hawke’s Bay premium winery in 1997.
Their Brisbane-based property is used as a seasonal residence and includes caretaker’s quarters as large as the average Australian home, two tennis courts and an orchard.
The 1950s Cape Cod-style property has aged superbly over time, as is often the case with homes of this standard where quality is paramount during the build.
Its extraordinary level of privacy is one of the reasons the Peabodys have retained the estate for more than 45 years.
The secluded retreat, 20km from Brisbane’s CBD, provides a sanctuary from the six-star hotel lifestyle associated with their global travels.
Yet 100 people can comfortably be entertained at the summer house which is accessible via a separate gate.
It contains a large dining hall serviced by a Gaggenau catering kitchen, separate male and female bathrooms and a glass-enclosed study overlooking the river.
An adjoining sandstone terrace with a gas fire pit offers an idyllic area to enjoy canapés before dinner is served.
The main house shares none of the nouveau riche vibe of more contemporary concrete luxury constructions; rather, it subtly emanates an old-world elegance courtesy of attention to detail in the spare-no expense finishings.
A conservatory attached to the large country-style kitchen and dining room features a peaked glass roof which retracts to capture sunlight filtering through two mature shade trees.
The separate main bedroom suite wing is almost apartment-like in design, with a panelled ceiling, open fireplace, kitchenette, twin ensuites, underfloor heating and a screened patio framing the river.
Three bedrooms and a guest chamber are accommodated on the upper level, while the lower level includes a billiards room and cellar with tasting room, which is equipped with everything the most serious of wine buffs requires.
