Could this be the ultimate in Queensland beach houses?

IT’S the type of home worth crossing multiple countries to fly home to, says its globetrotting owner.

It’s the answer to the question, what is Noosa style, says its award-winning Queensland designer.

Located in stunning Mission Beach, two hours south of Cairns, the “White House”, designed by Noosa-based Stephen Kidd, has absolute beachfront.

On the market for $3.25 million, the five-bedroom, four-bathroom, two-car space home sits on 810 square metres of absolute beachfront land.

Its owner, who prefers anonymity, says it was a challenge finding the right spot to create his dream beach house. “One thing that’s pretty hard to find in Australia is absolute beachfront without a forest or road in front of you. When we were looking there weren’t many places where you were right on the beach.”

Unlike Noosa, Mission Beach has flown somewhat under the radar, far from the beaten beach track, yet on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

“It’s been interesting over years seeing it change from country town when we were first there, to see interest pick up again when Peter Bond bought Dunk Island,” says the owner. “We lived through Asia for years and it was good to come back to a typical Queenslander style. I’ve lived in a lot of houses over the years and with this one we find we use every part of the home. And it is a beautiful part of the world.”

White House, named when the owners decided to allow it to be a holiday rental house when they were away, has proved itself in heavy weather, says Kidd.

“When Cyclone Yasi went through and flattened Dunk Island (in February 2011), I rang the builder and asked how the house fared and it didn’t have a scratch on it.”

So the house solid credentials, as well as stylish. “It captures the best of what is Noosa style and also it’s a Queensland style,” says Kidd. “That particular house is outstanding, first because of its location looking out towards Dunk Island and the whole house is built for family (life). There are designated separate spaces for all members of the family. This style has become the mainstream, it’s what people aspire to.”

The house sleeps 10 and is spread over two levels.

Simon Cowan of Sotheby’s International Realty Queensland is marketing it as having impeccable beachside credentials on the doorstep of one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

“This is the epitome of resort-style living. This stunning home has breathtaking ocean views that extend across the sparkling waters to capture Dunk, Bedarra and Hinchinbrook islands.”

Kidd says the crux of creating this type of home is ensuring spaces for outdoor living, lots of ventilated spaces internally, wide verandas and practical low-maintenance materials, yet strong.

The family which has called it home is dreading having to let it go.

“I blame it on kids’ Saturday sport,” the owner says. “I’ll be quite happy to keep it if we don’t sell.”
